Minerva is named after the Roman goddess of excellence — a deliberate choice by A Poveira, the Póvoa de Varzim cannery that has been producing these tins since 1942. The cannery sits near the fish market on Portugal's northern Atlantic coast, which has been one of the country's most productive fishing grounds for centuries. The proximity is not incidental — it means the fish arrives at the cannery on the day it is caught, selected by hand, and steamed using the same traditional method the cannery has used for over eighty years.
The tomato sauce sardines are one of Minerva's most classic preparations — assertive in flavour, with a sauce that has enough body and acidity to carry the fish rather than dilute it. Not a delicate tin. A confident one.
Eat on sourdough toast with a squeeze of lemon. Fold through pasta with garlic, chilli, and a splash of pasta water. Or open the tin at the table and eat with good bread alongside — the Portuguese way, and still the most honest way to understand what is inside.

Tab 3 — Brand
Minerva has been produced by A Poveira in Póvoa de Varzim since 1942 — one of the oldest canneries still operating in Portugal. The cannery sits close to the fish market, which has been central to its operation from the beginning: the fish is caught daily, selected by hand, and processed using traditional methods that have remained largely unchanged since the brand was founded. MSC certified, Kosher, Halal, and Dolphin Safe — a cannery that takes both quality and responsibility seriously.
