Berthe Sardines in Olive Oil

Berthe has been a name on a tin since 1902 — a brand launched for the French market, with an icon of Lyonnaise culture on the front, and one of the world's oldest canneries behind it. Today produced by Ramirez in Matosinhos, the best sardines from the morning fish market are selected and tinned the same day.

Wild-caught by purse seine from the North Atlantic, these are sardina pilchardus at their classic best — impossibly tender, juicy, and preserved in a clean olive oil that carries the flavour without competing with it.

Eat on toast, fold through pasta, or simply open and eat. The iconic girl on the tin has been on tables since 1902 for very good reason.
