Atlantic sardines, hand-canned in Matosinhos, smoked and blended with tomato, extra virgin olive oil and chilli. The heat is deliberate — it builds through the tin rather than hitting at once — and the smoke gives the whole thing a depth that sets it apart from a straightforward pâté.
Spread thickly on dark rye or sourdough toast. Serve alongside sharp pickles, which cut the richness cleanly. Open it as part of a board and it will outlast everything else on the table.

Ingredients: Sardines (Sardina pilchardus) (60%), extra virgin olive oil (21.4%), tomatoes (14.6%), spices — vinegar, pepper (1.7%), chilli pepper (1.3%), natural smoke, salt.

Brand
Ati Manel was founded in Matosinhos in 1922 and canned until the founder's death in the late 1950s. Decades later, his great-grandson — graphic designer Luís Mendonça — found the original recipes, tools and supplier notes in a family basement and brought the brand back. Each tin carries that history in its design and in the fish inside.
