Atlantic sardines, caught off the Portuguese coast and hand-canned in Matosinhos, smoked and blended into a smooth pâté with tomato and extra virgin olive oil. The smoke is present but not aggressive — it rounds the flavour rather than dominating it, and the texture is rich and spreadable without heaviness.

Straightforward and versatile in the way the best pantry staples are. Spread generously onto sourdough or dark rye, finish with a little lemon. Serve alongside pickles and good bread as part of a board. Stir through warm pasta with a handful of capers and parsley.

Brand

Ati Manel was founded in Matosinhos in 1922 and canned until the founder's death in the late 1950s. Decades later, his great-grandson — graphic designer Luís Mendonça — found the original recipes, tools and supplier notes in a family basement and brought the brand back. Each tin carries that history in its design and in the fish inside.
